About

The Great British Bake Off (GBBO) is a British television baking competition where 12 amateur bakers compete against each other over the course of twelve weeks. Each week, a theme is assigned (i.e. Pastry Week) and the contestants bake to impress the judges in the Signature, Technical, and Show Stopper rounds.

Show Popularity

Viewership for GBBO increases continuously until series 8, where it drops and plateaus thereafter. Why did the viewership drop by almost 5 million in Series 8? After series 7, the GBBO moved from BBC One to Channel 4, and previous judge Mary Berry and presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins left the show out of loyalty to BBC. Some viewers were also disappointed about the move since it meant the show would now include advertisements.

Baker Demographics

Unlike many television shows, GBBO's contestants make up all ages, ranging from as young as 17 to as old as 71. Females and males are equally represented on the show as well!

Handshake

34

Judge Paul Hollywood has given out 34 of his "Hollywood handshakes" over the seasons.

Technical

5

Series 3 contestant James Morton has won the technical round the most, at 5 times.

Star Baker

Series 5 contestant Richard Burr has won the most star bakers with 5 star baker titles.

Which Winner Received the Most Recognitions?

Nadiya has received the most recognitions out of the winners, but she has never gotten a handshake from Paul. A few of these winners, such as John, show that you don't have to be recgonized a lot throughout the season to be crowned the winner.
